The app that I used to take this is called ‘Cameramatic.’ It produces beautiful toy camera look. I should use this app more often.

A flickr member who is a contact, pointed out this photo to me. A photographer, Mikasi, shot the phalanx of police surrounding the protesters. It so happened that I was standing where the police were. Thanks to Mikasi (Mike Gordon) for letting me use this photo. More excellent May Day rally photos can be viewed in his Flickr stream.

May 1st is the International Workers’ Day and is a holiday in many countries. Here in the US, it is not a holiday, but it is recognized and celebrated, mostly with protests and marches – organized by the labor sector. In the past few years, immigration rights was the big issue. This year, the Occupy Movement is in the limelight, it’s We! Are! the 99% group which is very active, but the labor unions are very visible too.

Photographing the waves …

Feeling a little bit cooped up because of unseasonably low temperatures, I braved the wind and the cold to take a walk along the beach yesterday. I looked out the window – outside was quite yucky – a little bit of fog, choppy waters on the lake, wet pavement because it rained earlier.

But, I had to get up and move as I have been stuck in my chair since early morning … so I took a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Not much to see, the beach was practically empty – except for a guy walking his dog. Then a few more people arrived – some Indian tourists who proceeded to take photos (!), then more dog walkers, a runner and a crazy woman.

I took photos of the people photographing, as well as the brand new graffiti on the embankment of a neighboring building, and then the growing grass on the newly established nature preserve and bird sanctuary. It is amazing how nature reclaims its space. An area of the beach was fenced off – and let nature takes its course – a dune is naturally forming, and grass and other plants, some of which probably have not been seen growing in this area for a long time, sprouted. Soon, migrating birds will discover this area – and perhaps will stop here on their way to their summer or winter homes.

Chicago is on the main flyway of migrating birds from the Arctic and Canada – and they stop on the lake front for about a day or so before heading either to Florida and places down south during the winter, or flying up north from the south during the summer.

Yesterday, while walking from my bus stop to the Chicago Photography Collective Gallery two blocks away, I saw many photographers roaming around that I just had to take my iPhone out and shoot.

The Loop is the central business district of Chicago. Our collective’s gallery is located on State St. (on Randolph) inside the Block 37 mall.

Every spring, Chicago is awashed with flowers … and for a short 6 weeks or so, tulips bloom all over the place. They are most especially beautiful on Chicago’s shopping district, the upscale Magnificent Mile®.

This season, the tulips bloomed early. Six weeks early, according to the Magnificent Mile® Facebook page.

But I am not complaining. I, in fact, cannot get enough of them. They are too gorgeous not to be photographed.

And a lot of uncommon photographers agree with me.
