Photographing Minnehaha

I am currently on a road trip in Minnesota. First stop was Minneapolis, a vibrant, modern city 1/6 of which is composed of parks and other green spaces. The city planners way back when decided that each resident of the city should be no more than two blocks away from a park.

This one was taken at a park where Minnehaha Falls is.

Here are more pictures from the Minneapolis … and St. Paul trip. (While they are called Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul are quite different from each other – St. Paul has more historic buildings and is into preserving them … while Minneapolis is all about constructing modern architecture. That’s what I think anyway. Apparently residents of each city generally also don’t want to have anything to do with each other. I visited a friend who is living in Minneapolis – she herself has only been in St. Paul once. I find that odd actually. Or maybe not. I lived in a smaller twin cities arrangement before – Urbana and Champaign south of Chicago. Residents of both cities sort of feel the same way toward each other too.

Functional This is a beautiful space at the new Modern Wing...

The Full Moon Jam is held during the full moon at Chicago’s lakefront. Various fire twirlers, fire jugglers, fire blowers, fire eaters and drummers attend this incredible street performances.

Vegetable photography

My niece in the northern burbs of Chicago has a beautiful vegetable garden in their backyard. She planted it with vegetables that we are familiar with while growing up in the Philippines. Here’s one of her visitors during her twin’s birthday party … taking pictures of veggies we miss so much.

Rubber Ducky Race 2010

Volunteer photographer at yesterday’s Rubber Ducky Race on the Chicago River for the benefit of SO ILL – Special Olympics Illinois.

The Rubber Ducky Race is for the benefit of SO ILL (Special Olympics Illinois). People are encouraged to “adopt” a rubber ducky who will be on the race – for a fee. The owner of the winning ducky receives fabulous prizes. I think.

July 4 festivities

This year, the City of Chicago decided to split the Independence Day fireworks into three: one in the southside, one in downtown and one in the northside. This was done to save the city some of the cost of security and cleaning crews.

For the last four years, it has been my tradition to organize a picnic at Grant Park to view the display. I was a little bit disappointed when the city canceled the fireworks at Grant Park (traditionally on July 3) and changed the schedule to July 4 and split the big bang into three smaller bangs.

But, since the northside display is near my building, I decided to hold a viewing party from my balcony. It was spectacular. No crowds, no fighting for space, no looking for parking, no difficulty in transporting picnic baskets, no tiring trek to the bus or train station etc.

The photographs are shaky … it was a windy night and my tripod was not sturdy enough to withstand the wind. So sorry … but you can see the photographers on the beach with their tell tale camera lcds.

Freeze Mob at Chicago’s Millennium Park

Photographers taking pictures of the flash mob that was staged at the Bean today. Not much participants (I was one of them), the organizers were expecting over 100 mobbers but there were less than thirty who showed up. But we had fun. And people clapped.

Unfortunately, since I was frozen, I had not much mobility to take good pictures. I was raising my iPhone when everybody froze … so I was stuck in an awkward position.
