Blast from the Past – Chicago Photography Collective

I can’t believe it has been almost three years now!

The Chicago Photography Collective is a group of professional photographers who have come together to build a sense of community among photographers. It started out as a group of four people having lunch once a month (I’m not in this group), and now has more than thirty members (I am in this group). It is currently operating a gallery at 108 N. State St. in downtown Chicago (inside Block 37) under the auspices of the PopUpArt Loop® Gallery program of the Chicago Loop Alliance.

The Pop Up Art Loop transforms vacant real estate into new temporary art spaces to create energy, excitement and additional foot traffic in the Loop. It’s all win win win for the artists, the landlords and the public.

Our first gallery was at 29 E. Madison just off the corner of Madison and Wabash, next to 7-11 and the bank on the corner. We opened sometime in November of 2009 and stayed there for about another year or so because 7-11 decided to expand to our space. We were then homeless for awhile until we got offered another location inside Block 37 where we are now.

These pictures were taken during the gallery prep of our first show that opened sometime in the last week of November 2009 at the 29 E. Madison location.

Very nice initiative. As you say, its a win win for everyone and it spruces up the space as well. It can probably be replicated in other cities as well.
